The primary value of high-strength shipbuilding steel lies in weight reduction, rather than the strength figures themselves. By increasing the yield strength from 235 MPa to 315 MPa or 355 MPa, A131 high-strength steel allows for a 10% to 20% reduction in plate thickness in areas governed by longitudinal hull strength. This lowers the vessel's lightship weight, thereby increasing cargo capacity and improving fuel efficiency.
As plate thickness is reduced, the primary safety concerns shift from simple strength to buckling and fatigue. The Common Structural Rules (CSR) employ a "net thickness" approach—incorporating a corrosion margin—to ensure that, even with reduced thickness, the structure retains an adequate buckling reserve. Furthermore, there are strict limits on the proportion of high-strength steel used in the context of overall longitudinal strength. Structural detail design is equally critical; areas such as hatch corners and cutouts for longitudinal stiffeners are prone to stress concentration and must be verified for fatigue strength, as these are common initiation points for cracks.
BBN Steel supplies both standard and high-strength A131 shipbuilding plates, including grades such as AH32, AH36, DH36, and EH36. We can provide products that meet specific classification society requirements, including Z-direction (through-thickness) properties and impact testing. When requesting a quote, please specify the steel grade, plate thickness, and the relevant classification society.
Just like you, 70% customers choose long-term cooperation with BBN steel not only for our good product and service quality, good reputation in the international market, but also for our experienced one-stop raw material supply and further steel processing!
