A131 corrosion-resistant, high-strength shipbuilding steel

When selecting materials, naval architects often prioritize A131 steel over standard Grade A plate. This specification integrates seawater corrosion resistance with high strength; Grades A, B, D, and E cover conventional strength levels, while AH32 and AH36 offer yield strengths exceeding 315 MPa—allowing for reduced plate thickness while still maintaining an adequate corrosion allowance.

The primary technical challenges lie in rolling and heat treatment. Corrosion resistance is enhanced through low-carbon content combined with micro-alloying elements like copper and nickel, while impact toughness at -20°C is ensured via Thermo-Mechanical Controlled Processing (TMCP) or normalizing. For Z-direction (Z-grade) steel, sulfur content is strictly minimized to prevent lamellar tearing. Compliance with classification society standards and the provision of EN 10204 3.1/3.2 certification are mandatory requirements for acceptance.

BBN Steel maintains a consistent inventory of A131 shipbuilding steel, including Grades A, B, AH32, and AH36. Our products are certified by ten major classification societies—such as ABS, LR, CCS, and DNV—and are available in thicknesses ranging from 6 mm to 100 mm. Simply provide your required specifications, quantities, and destination port, and we will deliver a CFR (Cost and Freight) quote within 24 hours.
