A572 grade 50 or A709 grade 50 steel, what is the difference?

Both A572 grade 50 and A709 grade 50 steel are low alloy high strength steel. A572 grade 50 or A709 grade 50, what is the difference? A709 grade 50 steel is the bridge steel specification and A572 grade 50 steel is the building steel specification.

A709 grade 50 steel was deveoped for structures such as bridges with high live load to dead load ratios and repitive loading cycles. The chemistries of A572 grade 50 and A709 grade 50 steel are identical. ASTM is careful to keep A709 grade 50 synchronized with its equivalent non-brige standards.

The big difference between A572 grade 50 and A709 grade 50 steel is that A709 grade 50 has mandatory Charpy testing for tension components.

A709 grade 50 steel is widely used to build bridges. The same series steel grades are A709 Grade 36, A709 Grade 50S, A709 Grade 50W, A709 Grade HPS50W, A709 Grade HPS70W, A709 Grade 100, A709 Grade 100W, A709 Grade HPS100W.
