What is the difference between ASME SA 36 steel plate and ASTM A36 steel plate

A36 steel plate is carbon steel plate less than eight inches thick, with a yield of 36,000 psi. ASTM A36 steel is used in many applications throughout various industries, but does not include advanced alloys.

ASME SA 36 steel plate is designed based on ASTM A36 steel plate and used in construction of bridges and other structures. ASME SA 36 steel plate covers all the psi requirements of ASTM A36 steel plate as well as requirements for boiler and pressure vessel codes.

There are times when ASME SA 36 steel plate and ASTM A36 steel plate are the same, especially if they are used in boiler and pressure vessels. But this is not always the case. The ASTM A36 steel plate can be different from ASME SA 36 steel plate in pressure areas, but all SA 36 steel plate includes A36 steel plate designation, because the ASME standards are based on ASTM standards.

ASTM A36 steel plate is most widely used in construction because of its strength. A36 steel is used for constructing buildings and bridges, but is not designated for usage as a cable. ASME SA 36 steel plate can also be used for all the uses of A36 steel plate as well as usage in the construction of other pressure vessels.
