Attention to Stainless Steel 316 Welding

Stainless steel 316 is acid-resistant stainless steel. It often produce heat crack when welding stainless steel 316. The common types of heat crack are crater cracks, the heat-affected zone cracks, longitudinal crack and transverse crack.

The main reason of heat cracking is the effect of low-melting point impurities at austenite grain boundaries. In the latter part of the cooling crystallization process, the impurities are in the liquid state and are likely to form heat cracks under stress. Stainless steel 316 can be added the ferritic forming elements like chromium, vanadium to prevent heat cracking. The low-melting impurities are dispersed or divided by the ferritic to avoid their continuous net distribution and efficiently improve the anti-cracking.

There are other measures to avoid heat cracking. We can take action on the welding process by the following methods.

a. Choose a reasonable welded structures and welding in order to minimize welding stress.

b. Change the degree of welding groove and welding method to diminish the base material portion in the weld metal.

c. Weld the material quickly.

d. End the arc slowly and fill the crater to prevent the formation of cracks。
